SHIPPING CONTAINERS
Shipping containers developed as a method of moving & exporting cargo & have a fascinating history. However it is their role as secure & cheap storage units that led shipping containers to become familiar objects seen everywhere from school playgrounds to industrial estates and from building sites to back gardens. Shipping containers are now even being converted for use as houses & homes!

Nearly all shipping containers are 8ft wide with standard lengths of 20ft or 40ft. If you are looking to buy a shipping container for use as storage these lengths are usually the cheapest options. Anything shorter in length or in between must be modified which, although adding to the cost, can still represent unbeatable value for money in terms of secure anti-vandal storage. Indeed, Containers Direct specialise in the cutting down of shipping containers to the clients required length.

STORAGE CONTAINERS
What is the difference between a shipping containers & a storage container?

This is a question we are often asked! The simple answer is that shipping containers can be used as storage and for shipping but storage containers cannot not always be used for shipping but always for storage. There is an exception, however because storage containers can be used for shipping ......but only as deck cargo. By deck cargo we mean any equipment which should not be stacked one on top of the other on the deck of a boat.

Shipping containers are built to very precise specifications and must conform to ISO standards. They must be plated & certified in order to comply with international standards. Usually this means that they must be of a particular dimension & be capable of being stacked one on top of the other, often eight high, and be capable of carrying a minimum of 20 tonnes in weight.

These strict conditions do not apply to storage containers. A storage container can be any length, any size and built to any specification.

The dichotomy, however, is not that clear. A shipping container can become only suitable for storage is by attaching a small metal locking box to the door ( common as a means of protecting a padlock) The container is still capable of carrying a 20 tonne load & being stacked but is no longer a shipping container because it is ½ an inch too long at it's longest point). You can not be a little bit pregnant - you either are, of course, or you are not. You can, however, be little bit of a shipping container, entirely a shipping container or not a shipping container at all but only a storage container.

10 FT CONTAINERS SECOND HAND
Shipping containers come as standard as 8 ft wide and 20 ft or 40 ft in length. 10 ft containers are usually cut down from 40 ft containers. A 40 ft shipping container will therefore produce four 10 ft containers one of which will have the original container doors & one the original container end (or front wall to the use the proper terminology!)

This process of conversion enables clients to choose the type of doors most suitable for purpose.

From most suppliers the choice will be between original container doors or flat panelled doors. We believe that the level of security offered between the two is very similar.

The original door is most popular on building sites & has the advantage of having the rubber door seals to seal the unit. The disadvantage is that you often have to be a burly builder to open & close them!

The flat panelled doors are much easier to open & close & are more aesthetically pleasing. They are often the preferred choice of schools, clubs & for use as garden sheds & personal storage.

At Container Direct we offer a unique third option which combines the advantages of both types of door. We are lucky to have manufacturing facilities on site and have designed a manufactured door which is both easy to use & has rubber door seals.

SITE OFFICES
SITE OFFICES can either be anti-vandal and constructed from steel, or non vandal proof and timber constructed. The SITE OFFICES we are looking at here are constructed from steel, therefore designed to be anti vandal, and the windows are protected with lockable steel shutters. If you don't need this level of security you may consider timber jackleg cabins which are often cheaper to buy.

When buying SITE OFFICES the starting point is whether to choose new or second hand.

Buying new has many advantages of course. Unlike buying a new car you have the option of not just picking one off the shelf, like this selection of new offices and canteens but also of designing the cabin yourself using Containers Direct’s
conversion service. There are a number of possibilities that can be fitted to produce the cabin office you need, such as internal partitions, fitted kitchen units, toilets and wash basins, water heaters and extra doors and windows. All new cabins are insulated for comfort and lower energy costs.

Either way buying SITE OFFICES new represents great value for money in the long term. You can expect at least 15 years of trouble free use and the running costs will be lower too, especially in the case of the new eco-units which stress energy efficiency.

However, as John Maynard Keynes pointed out "In the long term, we're all dead" so for many people used SITE OFFICES will do the job! Luckily there are some great deals available at the moment. This is because most new SITE OFFICES are built for Cabin Hire companies who hire them to construction companies. In the current economic climate theses cabins are not being hired to builders but are being sold to container dealers. This is good news if you are looking for good quality portable office. For a great deal either way, choose from a refurbished cabin, or a bargain basement quality cabin.
