Shipping Containers For Garden Allotment Sheds

Shipping containers have grown in popularity as an alternative to the traditional garden shed, and for this reason are also a common sight on allotments. As allotments are often in accessible public spaces it's even more essential to ensure that anything stored there is securely locked away to prevent theft and vandalism. Steel shipping containers offer greater strength, security and space than a wooden shed. They are also wind and watertight and even a used container will last for a good 10 to 15 years.

Reasons to choose a shipping container for a garden allotment shed

  • Safe and secure tool storage: shipping containers are incredibly difficult to break into! Made from thick and durable Corten steel and fitted with a steel lockbox to encase the padlock you can be reassured your garden tools and equipment will be much safer than in a wooden shed.

  • Value for money: a good quality used container will typically cost you less per square foot than a wooden shed or other out-building.

  • A wide range of sizes: our shipping container sizes go from 6ft long right up to 40ft, so however large or small your storage requirements for the allotment are, we can supply a suitable container; no need to worry about cramming your stuff in to save money! If you have room for a larger container you can even store table and chairs inside so you can enjoy a spot of outdoor eating at the allotment.

At no extra cost we can fit our S1 easy-to-use doors, ideal for frequent use as they are more manageable to use than original shipping container doors.

  • Versatile: with a wide range of optional extras and endless possibilities for conversion of shipping containers, you can customise your container to tick all the boxes you want from your unit. For example, they can be fitted with electrics, repainted to any colour, or ply lined inside.

Concerned about the appearance of a shipping container allotment shed?

While shipping containers offer top notch strength and security, you may be put off by their appearance. A used metal box is not the most attractive sight in a green space. But with our choice of customisations it's possible transform a shipping container into something that not only blends into the surroundings, but is aesthetically pleasing too. A repaint to your chosen colour is a simple cosmetic improvement, or for the full works we offer features such as wood cladding, a sloping roof, and even a living roof! Take a look below at some of our container conversion work we've undertaken and see the features that can transform your allotment storage unit into something worthy of showing off.

Can you deliver a shipping container to an allotment?

Most of the time the answer is yes, but accessibility to your allotment plot is something that should be considered and discussed with our team before going ahead with your container purchase. For delivery of a standard shipping container a large lorry is required, and the container will need lifting off with a crane. For this reason it's essential that there's good access to your plot by road and the chosen spot where the container is to be off-loaded must have a hard-standing area and be clear of overhead obstructions.

If you don't have the required access to deliver a standard shipping container then we have other options! You may want to consider a flat pack container.

The good news is that every component of a flat pack container is man portable, so it can be delivered and off-loaded to an accessible spot and then each section carried by hand to your allotment. These containers come in three sizes, and can be joined together if you require a larger area of storage space. Our flat pack containers are of steel construction and are the best-selling and best quality demountable containers you will find in the UK.

Amongst the range of recommended flat pack containers for allotments you'll find the purpose built garden shed, ideal for small spaces if you only have a light load of tools and equipment to store.
