Shipping containers developed as a method of moving & exporting cargo & have a fascinating history. However it is their role as secure & cheap storage units that led shipping containers to become familiar objects seen everywhere from school playgrounds to industrial estates and from building sites to back gardens. Shipping containers are now even being converted for use as houses & homes!
Nearly all shipping containers are 8ft wide with standard lengths of 20ft or 40ft. If you are looking to buy a shipping container for use as storage these lengths are usually the cheapest options. Anything shorter in length or in between must be modified which, although adding to the cost, can still represent unbeatable value for money in terms of secure anti-vandal storage. STORAGE CONTAINERS
What is the difference between a shipping containers & a storage container?
This is a question we are often asked! The simple answer is that shipping containers can be used as storage and for shipping but storage containers cannot not always be used for shipping but always for storage. There is an exception, however because storage containers can be used for shipping ......but only as deck cargo. By deck cargo we mean any equipment which should not be stacked one on top of the other on the deck of a boat.
Shipping containers are built to very precise specifications and must conform to ISO standards. They must be plated & certified in order to comply with international standards. Usually this means that they must be of a particular dimension & be capable of being stacked one on top of the other, often eight high, and be capable of carrying a minimum of 20 tonnes in weight.
These strict conditions do not apply to storage containers. A storage container can be any length, any size and built to any specification.
The dichotomy, however, is not that clear. A shipping container can become only suitable for storage is by attaching a small metal locking box to the door ( common as a means of protecting a padlock) The container is still capable of carrying a 20 tonne load & being stacked but is no longer a shipping container because it is ½ an inch too long at it's longest point). You can not be a little bit pregnant - you either are, of course, or you are not. You can, however, be little bit of a shipping container, entirely a shipping container or not a shipping container at all but only a storage container.
