Shipping container sales for the purpose of overseas export are called ISO containers, which means they conform to standards that allow them to be stacked for transportation. These containers therefore come in standards sizes of 8ft wide, and 20 or 40ft long. Shipping a container that doesn't conform to ISO standards will be much more expensive as it will be treated as deck cargo.
All types of shipping containers are manufactured from galvanised steel, ensuring they are robust and secure against theft or damage - sometimes you will see shipping containers referred to as anti vandal for this reason. Shipping container sales for storage as opposed to shipping are available in a wider range of sizes, because they can be cut down to any size the customer requests. For example a 40ft container will yield four 10ft containers, two 20fts, or even a 25ft and a 15ft. ISO shipping container sales represent the most cost effective way to buy storage, as modifying a container adds to the price. However it is worth bearing in mind that modified shipping containers can have their doors repositioned on the longside of the containers during the modifying process - which is great news if you have limited space to store the container. The standard position for doors on an ISO container is on the end.
