How Much Should I Pay For a 20-foot Container?

What should you pay for a 20ft shipping container? It depends on more than the size. A standard-height 20ft shipping container is nominally 20ft long, 8ft wide and 8ft 6in high, but high-cube versions are taller. The container might be used or once-used, showing the marks of its working life at sea or freshly repainted, with original cargo doors or doors designed for easier everyday access.
All these things can affect the price, along with the condition of the individual container and where suitable stock is available. So how do you know whether a 20ft container quotation represents good value? Start by making sure you're comparing the same type of container and what's included.
How to Judge the Price of a 20ft Shipping Container
There isn't one reliable price for every 20ft shipping container. Even two used containers of the same size may differ in condition, specification and where they can be sourced. Prices can also change as stock moves between depots and new units become available. That's why a figure advertised today may not reflect what can actually be supplied for your requirements.
A better starting point is to decide which type of 20ft container you're comparing:
- Used 20ft container with original doors: Usually the starting point if keeping the cost down matters most. Expect signs of previous use, and check the condition of the individual unit rather than relying on a representative photograph.
- New (once-used) 20ft container: Generally costs more than a used container, but offers a cleaner appearance and less wear. Worth considering if the container will be positioned somewhere prominent or you prefer a newer unit.
- 20ft container with modifications: Easier-opening doors, repainting, lining or other additions change the specification and therefore the quotation. Check which features are included and which are being priced separately.
Once you've established the type of container you need, compare the quotations properly. Check the condition, door type, height, any included extras, warranty terms and whether VAT is included. Delivery and offloading should also be clearly identified. A cheaper container-only price may not be the cheaper option once everything you need is added.
What about location? Where a suitable container is available can affect its price, even before delivery is calculated. Your postcode, site access, haulage availability and the delivery vehicle required will influence the transport quotation. Buying a cheaper 20ft container: what to check
A lower-priced 20ft container can be a perfectly sensible purchase. If you need straightforward storage and aren't concerned about dents or the original paint finish, paying extra for a cleaner-looking unit may achieve very little. Bargains exist, and so do genuine no-frills containers.
Unfortunately, shipping containers are also advertised by people who don't have a container to sell. A convincing website, a photograph and a very low price are not proof of a genuine offer. If you're buying from a business you haven't dealt with before, it's worth taking a few minutes to check who's behind the advert:
- Check the company. Look up its name and company number on the Companies House register. Compare the trading details with the quotation and website. An active registration is useful information, but it doesn't by itself prove that the person contacting you represents that company.
- Check the website address. Read the full domain name carefully. Watch for small spelling changes, lookalike sites and email addresses that don't match the business you think you're dealing with.
- Check independent reviews. Look beyond testimonials displayed on the seller's own website. Review the history, dates and detail of feedback on independent platforms, rather than relying on a handful of recent five-star ratings.
- Check the container and quotation. Ask whether the photographs show the actual unit or a representative example. Confirm the condition, door type, any work included, warranty terms, VAT, and whether delivery and offloading are extra.
- Check before paying. Be cautious about pressure to pay immediately, especially if the payment details are unexpected or don't match the business. If something feels wrong, verify the details using a phone number you've found independently.
A price far below other quotations is a reason to ask questions, not proof of a scam. Equally, a professional-looking website is not a reason to skip the checks.

Why do some 20ft shipping containers cost more?
Sometimes you really are getting something different for the money. A once-used container will generally look cleaner than an older used one. With used stock, condition can vary, and one quote might include checks, repainting, a lockbox or other work that another seller charges for separately. Ask what warranty is included, too.

Don't forget delivery and positioning
A low container-only price isn't necessarily the lowest delivered price. Tell the supplier your delivery postcode and what access is like at the site. Where to find discounted shipping containers
If price is your main consideration, it's worth checking our clearance containers. Units can go into clearance for different reasons, including a buy-back or part-exchange, a change in requirements or simply the need to make room for other stock.
Clearance doesn't automatically mean poor quality. Available sizes, condition and specifications do vary, though, so check the individual listing and ask for a quotation that includes delivery and offloading to your site.
